Self-Healing Concrete May Be a Solution to Crack Repair Cost Issues

In the hope of achieving sustainability in the architecture engineering and construction industry, the research for the development of “self-healing” materials is ongoing. One of its latest innovations is the self-healing concrete. Concrete is a widely used construction material, for its durability, practicality, and high thermal mass. However, due to problems with mixing or pouring of the composite material during manufacturing or on site, cracks may start to show.

While concrete may be a low maintenance material, those surfacing cracks could be very problematic and they cost a lot to fix. This might not be the case, though, with the development of this new self-healing concrete, which uses bacteria to fill the forming cracks with limestone, when it comes in contact with water.
